The relationship of the human body to material/matter/object….

How things come up against us, through handling, support, entanglement….

The object/thing that interacts with our own physicality with unique consequences, such as the muscle we build around our bone structure that can be felt as if separate to our ‘self’, the objects that we use to enable/enhance our movement and engagement to other material and matter, such as a walking aid (crutch, stick), a helmet or glove for protection or a hand tool to cut or strike with.

In furthering my exploration of stuff, things and objects – I have been participating on a number of hands-on courses such as butchery, bread making and fish knife skills to understand what it means to handle different things, and in handling those things what I learn about the material, my body and the purpose of the handling process and human intervention. Such as the precision of weighing ingredients when making bread and how the material is alive and constantly changing, and with butchery, the goal to leave as little meat on the bone and when portioning parts of the cow carcass to use the weight of the material to break the bone. All of these living/dead materials are for me material (I have no interest in cooking!!!) – to respond to and negotiate physically and intellectually. It is fascinating how different material/matter require different handling in response to the materials commodity status, use and value.
